  • HDL, or high density lipoprotein, is the "good" cholesterol in our bodies. It helps remove LDL, or the "bad" low density lipoprotein, cholesterol from the blood, preventing build-up in arteries. With low HDL, you are at risk for heart disease. This can be avoided by taking action to prevent some of the causes of low HDL.

    Smoking

According to the American Heart Association, cigarette smoking is directly associated with low levels of HDL. Smoking can increase your risk of heart disease.

    Overweight

Obesity and being overweight can cause low levels of HDL. Weight loss can easily raise the HDL levels 4 to 6 percent, according to the American Family Physician.

    Genetics

If there is a family history of heart disease linked to low levels of HDL, there is an increased chance that other family members will inherit low HDL.

    No Physical Activity

Physical inactivity and leading a sedentary lifestyle can cause low HDL and, ultimately, coronary heart disease. Moderate activity can easily increase the HDL levels in your system.

    Diet

Eating foods that are high in trans fats can cause low levels of HDL. Avoiding fried foods, chips and crackers will help improve a low HDL level.
