Growing flowers is a rewarding experience, but flowers require some basics to thrive. Whether you're growing them inside or outdoors, consider watering habits, sun exposure and soil type.
Sun
Sunshine is imperative for photosynthesis to occur. Photosynthesis converts the light energy from the sun into food for the plant.
Water
All flowers need water, but to varying degrees. Depending on how much sun the flower gets, how porous the soil is, and the type of flower, watering practices will differ. As a general rule, keep the soil around the flower moist.
Soil
Soil contains the minerals and nutrients flowers require for strong and healthy growth. Soil can be amended by adding compost, humus or peat.
Air
Flowers require clean air. If planting outdoors, don't place flowers too close to the road where the exhaust from cars can harm them. All flowers have a specific tolerance to warmth or cold. Select the right flower for the temperature in the area.
Fertilizer
Flowers can benefit by receiving fertilizer every three months. Use the right kind of fertilizer, and follow the directions on the product label. Fertilizer contains nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous--important for growth, root development and the overall health of the plant.
