Asthma, a condition affecting your lungs, can't be cured. However, asthma can be controlled with long-term and quick- relief medications. These medications called inhalers relieve your symptoms and asthma attacks.
Significance
Asthma happens when your bronchial tubes, or airways of your lungs, are narrowed. This occurs when they become inflamed and constricted, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Signs
Signs of uncontrolled asthma are wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing or chest pain. When these symptoms worsen or come on suddenly, it's called an asthma attack.
Long-term Inhalers
Your doctor may prescribe a long-term corticosteroid inhaler, like Flovent or Qvar, for you to use daily whether you have symptoms or not. This inhaler will reduce inflammation in your airways.
Quick-relief Inhalers
When you have asthma attacks, you need a fast-acting inhaler such as albuterol. This bronchodilator relieves your symptoms within minutes and lasts for approximately six hours, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Considerations
In 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration required that quick-relief inhalers be made with environmentally friendly hydrofluoroalkane (HFA). The difference is the increased cost, taste and feel of the inhalers.
