Requirements for marriage licenses are similar throughout the United States. States and counties may vary when it comes to necessary documentation or minimum age requirements.
Identification
Applicants must provide documentation corroborating the identities of both parties. Government issued photo ID, accompanied by birth certificates and social security cards are acceptable.
Consent
Marriageable age is 18 in most states, but marriage between minors is allowed with parental consent. Mississippi specifically requires parties be 21. Younger brides and grooms must obtain written consent from parents or legal guardians.
Test
As of 2009, 11 states and the District of Columbia require a blood test for both parties. Applicable states include Alabama, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Georgia.
Record
All states require that both parties not be currently married. Date of prior divorce is mandatory, if applicable. Some states, such as Michigan, require documentation to be produced and filed with the license if the divorce occurred less than six months prior to the upcoming marriage.
Fees
Application fees varies by county. Be prepared to present the fee at the time of application.
