In 1972, an electrical engineer named Dr. Takuo Aoyagi began experimenting with medical devices (pulse oximeters) to measure oxygen saturation in arterial blood. Around 1978, the Minolta company made advances with the pulse oximeter and marketed them worldwide. Further advances and mass marketing by additional companies occurred during the 1980s.
