There are many steps to becoming a lawyer. Education is the first, and candidates must earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree and a J.D. degree.
Bachelor's Degree
An undergraduate degree typically takes four years to complete. Typical law school candidates choose to get a degree in liberal arts before applying to law school.
Specific Interests
Students with specific interests might pursue a major in science, such as accounting or biology.
J.D. Degree
A J.D. (Juris Doctor) degree is typically a three-year degree. The first year is spent learning the basics of the legal system. The second and third years are spent on elective courses tailored to the type of law one wishes to practice. Students are also expected to intern at law offices.
Bar Exam
Prospective lawyers need to take and pass a bar exam. Bar exams are administered by individual states.
Lawyers in Master of Laws
Lawyers who wish to become scholars or academics complete an L.L.M. degree. An L.L.M usually takes one year to complete.
