Whether you are decorating a complete bathroom or just one element, such as a bathroom partition, you must make sure that the materials you are using are moisture-resistant, easily cleaned and durable. Once your plan meets these criteria, your decorating scheme is limited only by your budget and your imagination.

Style

Evaluate your bathroom decor. Into which category does it fit? According to Better Homes and Gardens, there are three basic decor styles: country, contemporary, and traditional. A fourth can be classified as juvenile, or decor for kids. Country-style decor incorporates earth tones and other rich colors. It might use old-fashioned fabrics such as gingham, lace curtains with ribbon tiebacks, a willow basket for towels and handmade guest soaps. Contemporary decor emphasizes economy of accessories, clean lines, simple background colors, such as white or off-white, and sleek surfaces. Traditional decor makes the most of opulent florals, gilded finishes and fixtures, and sumptuous touches. Juvenile style abounds in bright colors, durable finishes and fun accents such as a rubber ducky shower curtain with matching wallpaper border.

Materials

What medium will you be working with? Remember, your materials should be water-resistant and durable, such as tile, waterproof paint, vinyl, and fabrics that are either treated with waterproofing or are removable for cleaning. To match your medium to the style of your decor, think about hand-painted tiles or calico for country decor; try light-colored wood accents or a geometric tile arrangement for contemporary; consider a textured and painted surface with a gold-sponged overlay for traditional; and try brightly colored vinyl stick-on art or a fun painted scene when decorating for kids.

Decorate

Using the materials you have chosen, decorate your bathroom partition in your chosen style. If you are using hand-painted tiles, you could alternate them with solid color tiles to imitate a gingham pattern for a country look. If you would like to use plain wood accents in your contemporary bathroom, try arranging several small, simple wooden picture frames for a vignette of photos on the partition wall. For a richly textured partition in a traditionally decorated bathroom, you might paint the surface in a darker shade, layer a lighter color over this using a textured roller, then finish it off with a lightly sponged metallic gold paint for a gilded look. For a child's bathroom, you could apply a water-resistant wallpaper scene or design a mosaic using small pieces of glass tile to create a duck, or a whale, or whatever you wish.
