  • DJing is a great hobby and can become an even greater vocation. Getting started does not have to cost a lot of money. In fact, it is possible to begin DJing for less than $1,000.

    Mixer

Mixers are the foundation of every DJ rig. You can find entry-level mixers for a couple hundred dollars, increasing from there to several thousand dollars. The price of a mixer is driven by the number of channels you want to use (two or four are most common) and the quality of the sound processing.

    Turntables

Turntables range in price from $150 to about $1,000 including the needles, or cartridges. Turntables that are powered with a motor connected to the turntable using a belt are cheaper than models powered by the motor directly.

    Dual CD Players

Dual CD players come with hardware and a controller to play two CDs at a time. These units are reliable but limited in their capabilities. A Dual CD player from a reputable dealer will cost between $200 and $1,000.

    Desktop CD Players

Desktop CD players are component pieces that play one CD at a time. You can add as many as you like; some DJs control four CD decks at a time. Desktop CD players are more expensive than dual players, with entry-level versions selling online for about $300 and more professional versions topping $2,000 each.

    Headphones

Headphones are used to cue-up and monitor tracks privately before they are heard over the main sound system. You can pick up a decent pair of headphones for about $75.

    Reputable dealers

Be aware of the risks of purchasing gear online. Some online stores sell "gray-market" versions, which can invalidate the manufacturer's warranty. Ensure that the company you are buying from is a legitimate reseller of the equipment. A quick visit to the manufacturers website will usually tell you if the online store is indeed an authorized reseller.
