  • Leather offers the advantage of being a rugged material. It is difficult to make, but not so difficult to maintain when compared to clothing like silk, for instance. There are a wide variety of leather apparel items, such as leather jackets, leather pants and leather shoes. Care of leather items is important, as they can attract stains easily, and leather clothing is especially susceptible to becoming dirty when made with synthetic lining.

    Cleaning

The most common problems you face with leather clothing include cigarette burns, soiling around the collar and rips that occur when clothing gets stuck to sharp substances that can cause it to tear. One of the easiest ways to clean dirt that accumulates around the collar of the jacket or any other apparel is to use a detergent and brush it on the leather. When dealing with stubborn dirt, you can try putting a bit of vinegar on the brush. If the problem persists and when dealing with cigarette ash, the cleaning is best left to a professional dry cleaner.

    How to Clean

Dirt is best cleaned regularly, preferably on a daily basis, with the help of a hairdresser's brush. The large face and long handle make it easy to reach all parts of the clothing. The texture of the brush hair is such that most kinds of dirt easily come off without damaging the leather. After each wear or use, simply brush off the garment before rehanging it to ensure that it remains in top shape.

    Repair

Leather clothing is susceptible to holes and scuffs. To repair holes, which can easily get bigger when they are not repaired early, use a hole-filling chemical that comes in a leather repair kit. This chemical acts as a sort of filler, similar to darning clothing or a patch. The repair kit usually has instructions on how to do this. In the case of a scuff mark, the same instructions and binding material can be used, as a scuff mark is usually a small type of tear in the grain of the leather. In the case of a hole, use a puncture patch before applying the leather filler. Make sure you choose the right color filler and test the coloration on an inconspicuous area to ensure a match before the chemical is applied.
