The job outlook for fashion designers between now and 2016 is expected to be slower than average growth, and the competition is expected to be intense for these jobs. Employers in fashion design usually hire people with a two- or four-year degree in fashion design from a college or private art or design school.
On the Other: You Can Gain Experience Other Ways
Interning with design or manufacturing firms, working in retail stores, becoming a personal stylist or a tailor can give you skills to help you land a job in fashion design. You may also try to enter your designs in student or amateur contests.
Bottom Line
While formal training is usually an advantage to help you get a job as a fashion designer, if you can demonstrate that you can sketch and can present a good portfolio, have good sewing and pattern making skills as well as good sales skills, you may get a job without going to school for fashion design.
