Baseballs bounce off of a metal bat faster than they bounce off of a wooden bat. Every year, metal bat manufacturers are producing bats with more power, higher performance and bigger sweet spots. Aluminum bats are also stronger and do not break as easily as aluminum bats do, unless the game is played in severely cold weather. In these conditions, aluminum bats can crack.

On the Other: Wooden Bats are Safer

There were 17 deaths from batted balls between 1991 and 2001. Of that, eight were from non-wood bats, two were from wood bats, and the rest were unknown, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The New York City Council voted to outlaw metal bats in high school games. The main reason for the ban was the fact that the ball comes off the bat faster, giving players less time to react, thereby increasing the chance of serious injury.

    Bottom Line

Metal bats perform better. They cost more than wooden bats, but they also last longer and do not splinter like wooden bats do. However, they are more dangerous than wooden bats.
