Lady Justice

Justice is supposedly blind, impartial and powerful. A symbol of an ancient Roman goddess named Justitia represents these concepts in our legal system. She bears a sword (power), wears a blindfold (impartiality) and holds scales that represent fairness and equality. For hundreds of years, this image has been used to represent justice.

Concept

The Scales of Justice is a concept within the legal system that represents equality. Ideally, all cases are supposed to start off balanced and then tip to one direction or the other.

Supreme Court

The highest authority of law within the United States is the Supreme Court. The Scales of Justice is a symbol that is used within the federal building of the Supreme Court, and this governing body strives to promote this concept of justice within the American legal system.

Western Civilization

Western countries such as the United Kingdom and France also use the Scales of Justice symbol to represent the concept of justice within their legal systems.

Permanent Symbol

The Scales of Justice is a permanent symbol of Western civilization and, as an idea, it will always be used as an icon that represents the natural right to justice for all human beings.
