  • Three-D modeling is a form of computer graphics that has been growing in popularity as computers become more powerful. Adding 3-D models to presentations and web sites has become common, but before using them, you should understand what 3-D modeling is and what it involves.

    Definition

    Three-D modeling involves the creation of objects in three-dimensional space using connected points. Three-D models allow you to view objects from all sides, as opposed to flat, 2-D objects. Models can vary in complexity from a simple sphere to an automobile with all moving parts.

    Creating 3-D Models

    Three-D models are created using any of a variety of modeling programs such as AutoCAD, 3-D Studio Max, Lightwave 3-D, Blender, Maya, Form-Z or TrueSpace.

    Uses

    Three-D modeling is used in movie and television special effects, video game production, engineering simulations, medical simulations, architecture walkthroughs, forensic animations and even fine art.

    Types of 3-D Modeling

    There are multiple methods of 3-D modeling. Polygonal models consist of many small triangles. Primitive modeling involves creating models from primitives, or basic shapes such as spheres, cubes and cylinders. NURBS modeling involves smooth curves attached to control points, and is ideal for creating organic shapes and objects. Spline modeling is similar to NURBS modeling, but is easier to use.

    3-D vs. 2-D

    Three-D objects offer more flexibility than 2-D objects. Two-D is limited to showing only one view of an object. Three-D provides views from all sides of the object, which is particularly useful for animations and walkthroughs. However, 3-D models are more difficult and more time-consuming to create.
