  • Vintage tools often come to their new owners in less than stellar shape. Years of use and often lack of use can leave tools dirty and filled with rust spots. Due to their age, vintage tools are not easy to clean. Using a substance that is too abrasive can permanently damage them. Cleaning with oils and wax compounds are often the best and most gentle solutions.

    Turtle Wax

Applying a common wax compound is your best and safest option for cleaning vintage tools. It will remove dirt without removing the tool's original finish. Turtle Wax, the same product used to make a vehicle's exterior shine, is perfect for restoring an old tool's natural luster. Apply the wax with a gentle cloth; a used garage rag or an old sock work well. Massage the wax thoroughly into the cloth before applying it to the tool in gentle circular motions. When finished, gently cleanse the tool in cold water and pat dry.

    Linseed Oil

Rubbing linseed oil into any wooden surface has long been the practice of anyone seeking to restore and maintain vintage wood. Many tools have handles and other parts that cannot be cleaned in the same fashion as their metal counterparts. Using a soft cloth or a cheesecloth, pour around 2 to 3 tbsp. of the oil into the cloth and gently massage the wood. Linseed oil should be used sparingly, however, because repeated use can significantly darken the wood. It is extremely useful on wooden tool parts that are dry and cracked. One application will not harm the integrity of your vintage tools.

    Steel Wool

Abrasive and rough by nature, steel wool should be used carefully when cleaning vintage tools. It should only be used on extremely dirty tools when other options have been tried first. Though steel wool can clean your tools, removing decades of rust and grime, it can also take away some of the distinguishing features that make your vintage tools so unique. Use the finest grain of wool available, 0000, and apply it gently to the tools along with a generous amount of wax. Repeat this process until your tools are clean.
