Workplace discrimination occurs for a variety of reasons. With numbers on the rise in the United States, it remains a serious issue in the workforce. Understanding the causes of workplace discrimination will better aid you in the fight against it.
Definition
Workplace discrimination is when an employee suffers unfavorable and discriminatory practices in the form of hiring, wages, promotions, terminations or work duties.
Types
Workplace discrimination comes in several forms, including, but not limited to, race, age, sexual orientation, gender, religion, physical appearance and disabilities.
Psychological Causes
Workplace discrimination occurs for various psychological reasons, including racism, sexism, bigotry and ignorance. Those who practice discrimination feel superior to those they discriminate against--for example, superiors using their prejudices, rather than work history, in deciding where to cut costs.
Social Causes
Competition in the workplace can play a large part in discrimination. A highly competitive environment can cause employees to seek weaknesses and exploit them for person gain. For example, when employees are jostling for a position, one might discriminate against a competitor to make him or her uncomfortable and more likely to quit.
Encouragement
A particular work environment also can encourage workplace discrimination. The attitudes of superiors have a direct effect on the behaviors, attitudes and actions of their subordinates. If superiors discriminate against particular groups, it encourages other employees to do the same in hopes of currying the favor of those in charge.
Solutions
Despite there being reasons why workplace discrimination occurs, under no circumstances should you accept it or have to bare it. You can address the situation at work, report to a supervisor or seek legal consul. You also can file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission).
