  • The state of Maine has a seat belt law for drivers and passengers of all vehicles required by federal motor safety standards to have seat belts. Drivers not following the law risk a fine.

    Basics

Drivers and passengers are required to be seat belted or secured in a protective restraint.

    Fines

According to MaineLegislature.org, failure to properly protect a passenger will result in a $50 fine for first infraction, $125 for the second, and $250 for the third and subsequent infractions.

    Children

A child weighing less than 40 lbs. must be properly secured in a child safety seat, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation requirements. Children under 8 years of age and 40 to 80 lbs. or under 12 and less than 100 lbs. should be in the back seat and safely restrained.

    Exceptions

Rural mail carriers and newspaper delivery people are not required to wear seat belts during deliveries. A physician's certificate is required for a person exempted from using a seat belt due to a medical disability or condition.

    Limo and Cab Drivers

Drivers of commercial vehicles transporting people for a fee need not force a passenger to be seat belted.
