Identification
Brad nails are small and thin, ranging anywhere between 1/2 inch and 2 inches in length. Brad nails are often ribbed and have small, flat heads, although some varieties have no heads.
Uses
Brad nails are used almost exclusively with wood trim or other forms of framework, although they're also found in furniture repair and upholstery.
Function
Because of their size, brad nails are able to secure thin pieces of wood without causing unnecessary damage. Their heads are also easy to hide with paint or varnish.
Types
A pneumatic or electric nail gun is typically used in driving brad nails. When used with such guns, brad nails are sold in clips and may even come with a glue coating that heats up when driven, adding additional holding strength.
Considerations
When attempting to drive a tiny brad nail with a hammer, it can help to hold the nail with a hairpin or pliers in order to avoid bruised fingers.
