  • The ultrasound field is becoming one of the fastest growing areas in the health-care industry, and the need for ultrasound technicians is expected to grow much faster than average in the foreseeable future.

    Facts

The field of ultrasound technology also is known as diagnostic medical sonography. The field of diagnostic medical sonography does not have a preferred level of education, resulting in several different avenues of education that can be pursued.

    Education

Training for sonography can occur through hospitals, vocational-technical institutions, colleges and universities, and the armed forces.

    Accreditation

Programs obtain accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs. College and university programs are usually accredited; however, some hospitals are accredited as well.

    Certification

None of the 50 states requires licensure for ultrasound technicians. There are organizations that certify the skills of a sonographer (ultrasound technician) through credentialing and registration. One such organization is the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

    Considerations

Other skills necessary for sonographers are good interpersonal and communication skills, good hand-eye coordination and a desire to keep learning.
