  • Television has made some serious changes in picture quality and clarity. Commonly referred to as high-definition televisions, or HDTVs, 1080p televisions produce the best picture in televisions today.

What does the P stand for?

Televisions can be advertised as 1080i or 1080p. The "i" stands for "interlaced," while the "p" stands for "progressive scan."

    Interlaced Vs. Progressive Scan

An interlaced picture scans each frame of video in two passes---odd-numbered lines on one pass and even-numbered lines on the next. Progressive scan renders the entire frame in one pass. An interlaced picture can cause a "jagged" appearance to diagonal lines in your picture, while progressive scan produces a much smoother-looking picture.

    What is 1080?

The "1080" in "1080p" is in direct reference to the number of vertical lines of resolution. A high-definition television with full 1080p has a resolution of 1920 pixels x 1080 pixels, or 2,073,600 total pixels (short for "picture elements").

    Standard Definition

Standard definition has a resolution of 720 x 480, which is 345,600 pixels.

    Common Usage

1080p HDTVs are capable of displaying 480i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolutions. However, only Blu-ray discs and some broadcast, cable and satellite HD channels contain 1080p content, which is required to view a full high-definition picture on your HDTV.
