They can give you discounted bulk orders when you are starting out, since you'll probably be low on capital as you begin starting up your business. When selling the products to salons or individuals, increase the price so you can make a profit. Be sure to ask for a catalogue or brochure from the manufacturers so you know what to buy.

Develop Relationship with Salons

While some individuals will come into the store and give you business, having a relationship with salons where large amounts of your product will be bought in bulk is the most important way for your company to make money. By slightly marking up certain hardware items that are needed--such as scissors, clippers, combs and brushes--as well as being cheaper than other hair supply store competition, you'll attract the business of the smaller, more intimate salons. For the bigger salons or hair cutting chains, products like gel and mouse will probably move the quickest, as they have the most turnover of clientele.

Expertise

What will really separate you from the rest of the competition is your knowledge of the products on the market and what those products do for customers. For example, selling specific types of product to salons or barbershops with primarily black clientele will show that you know how that product works with different types of hair. This applies for any race or hair type in various salons or barbershops located in and around different regions of the area your business is located. Also having a smaller number of products to sell may be a better idea when starting off, so that your knowledge or inventory isn't spread too thin.
