Bone spurs can develop for different reasons and in different places. The most common place is in the foot because we put all our weight on our feet when we walk, so this area gets the most pressure.
Scientific Name and Definition
Bone spurs on the feet are called osteophytes. A bone spur is an abnormal growth or an overgrowth of the bone.
On Top of the Foot
Bone spurs on top of the foot can be felt because of the lack of muscle and thin skin.
Heel Spurs
The bottom of the heel is the most common spot for a bone spur on the foot. This could be because it is the largest bone in the foot. According to foot.com, "Calcium deposits form when the plantar fascia pulls away from the heel area, causing a bony protrusion, or heel spur to develop."
Pain
Foot spurs can cause a great deal of pain, especially when found in the heel. They also can go unnoticed and cause no pain. Foot spurs usually are a health concern only when causing pain .
Causes
Causes for foot spurs include abnormal activity, excessive tension or a joint disease.
