Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that affects 1 to 5 percent of the population. It is the third most common chronic illness among adolescents. Anorexics can lose up to one-third of their body weight--and will continue to lose weight until the heart stops beating. Without treatment, up to 20 percent of anorexics die.
