Part-time employment is a term that describes many types of labor. Although the distinction does not hold much significance as far as workers' rights are concerned, it is important to employers in determining employee benefits and for statistical purposes.
Government Definition
The U.S. Department of Labor has not issued a definition of part-time employment, but the Bureau of Labor Statistics defines part-time employment as actively working for 34 hours or fewer per week.

Seasonal work also is considered part-time employment.
Voluntary and Involuntary Status
People who work part time while seeking full-time employment are considered involuntary part-time workers. Those work part time for personal reasons do it voluntarily.
