  • A 35mm SLR is a single-lens-reflex camera. With an SLR camera, what you see in the viewfinder is also what the camera lens is "seeing." This includes focus, light, color, and distance.

    35mm Film

The most common film used in still photography is 35mm. It was developed in the 1890s by Eastman and Edison and used in still photography by the early 1900s.

    History

SLR cameras were developed in the late 19th Century, but 35mm SLR cameras were not invented until the 1930s. It was the Nikon 'F' model (introduced in 1959) that became the first successful camera among both amateurs and professionals.

    Adaptability

One of the advantages of a 35mm SLR camera is that lenses can be switched to suit the photographer. It is this flexibility that made them popular.

    Disadvantages

SLRs are largely superior to other camera types. However, there are some disadvantages. They tend to be more expensive, and the complex mechanisms are in greater need of repair over time.

    Digital Age

The use of 35mm film is rapidly declining. Most digital cameras are SLR, except the photographer typically looks at the LCD monitor rather than the viewfinder. More expensive digital cameras will also have SLR viewfinder capability.
