Bodily injury insurance protects people who are injured in an automobile accident caused by another driver. It is so important that most states require motorists to carry this insurance. If motorists don't have it, they may be required to prove they have enough financial resources to pay for accidents they may cause.
Coverage
Bodily injury (BI) insurance covers medical bills, loss of income and pain and suffering in the event that someone else is injured in your car or someone else's, according to CarInsurance.com.
Minimum Amount Needed
Individual states set the minimum amount of BI coverage motorists must have; it usually starts around $15,000.
Recommended Amount
The Insurance Information Institute recommends minimum coverage of $100,000/$300,000, which is $100,000 per person per accident, up to a maximum of $300,000 per accident.
Benefits
BI insurance protects a motorist's assets from being seized to pay for accidents they cause.
What It Doesn't Cover
BI insurance does not cover the driver who caused the accident. The driver will need to have personal injury protection on his policy or private health insurance to pay for his medical expenses.
