  • A clementine is a sweet orange from the rutaceae family of fruits. They are small, with thin, loose skins, and are easy to peel and easy to eat. The color is dark orange.

    History

According to Practically Edible, a food encyclopedia, some people theorize that the clementine was discovered in 1902. The theory is that a French missionary named Clement Rodier found the first one in West Algeria. Some botanists, however, believe that the clementine existed in Asia prior to this.

    Production

As of 2004, most clementines were exported from Spain, in the regions of Valencia and Castellon.

    Nutrition

A clementine is 85% water. An average clementine contains 24 calories and five grams of carbohydrates.

    Popularity

The clementine gained popularity in the U.S. in the 1980s. A freeze killed much of the crop of oranges in Florida, resulting in an orange shortage. Clementines gained popularity quickly and have been imported ever since.

    Tips

Avoid blemished clementines. Because of the thin skin, a clementine will feel much softer than an orange.
