Suspension tuning and modification have all but taken over as the dominant form of auto customization today. Camber kits are ancillary devices designed to help correct some of the suspension geometry problems caused by excessive lowering.
MacPhereson Suspension
Most cars use MacPhereson strut suspension. The strut-and-spring assembly acts as the top link on these designs.
Spring Lowering
When shorter springs are installed on strut cars, the distance between the top of the wheel and the chassis effectively shortens, causing the wheel to lean inward at rest. This condition is called negative static camber.
Negative Camber Effects
Though negative camber can be good for racing, it can cause poor braking, instability at high speed and rapid tire wear.
Negative Camber Symptoms
Excessive camber can be recognized by tire wear. Cars with this condition will exhibit much more wear on the inside of the tire than the outside.
Camber Kits
These kits replace the top strut mount with a laterally slotted plate and nut, which allows the user to adjust the angle of the strut with little more than a socket wrench.
