Buying the right power tools plays an important role in ensuring that the task at hand is completed properly. Knowing how to determine which is the right band saw intended for the job will make sure that the job is completed safely and properly and that the desired results are achieved in the process. There are different sizes of band saws available depending on what needs to be achieved.

Throat Width

The size of a band saw is based on the throat width. The throat width is the distance between the column or the post and the blade. This measurement is just slightly less than the diameter of the wheel on a band saw with two wheels. Two-wheel band saws that have 16 inch wheels have a size or throat width of approximately 15.5 inches. The additional half inch is comprised of the guard, which is on the saw's column side.

Three-Wheel Band Saws

Consider the trade off offered by three wheel saws. Three wheeled band saw models are designed differently. The goal here is to increase the width of the throat, which in some situations can be useful. Earlier models featuring three wheels were reputable for having a short blade life because they made use of small wheels. Newer models have seen improvement in this area. Three-wheel band saws do not have the same blade life as two-wheel models, so there is a trade off to consider between throat width and blade life.

Cut Depth

The saw's depth of cut capacity is another consideration to make in determining the right band saw size. The depth of cut capacity refers to the thickest cut the saw is capable of making, which on consumer-grade saws is approximately 6 inches in most cases. This capacity can be increased by a height attachment, which bolts between two castings, to raise the top casting so that the depth of cut can be increased to between 10 inches and 12 inches.
