Tabletop fountains are a relatively inexpensive way to introduce the chaotic charm of dancing water into a home. Water fountains are an opportunity to express your personal creativity or to highlight a professionally designed look.
Pump
Purchase a small submersible water pump capable of pumping 70 to 90 gallons of water per hour.
Container
Choose a water-tight container to hold the water pump and water. Be creative in choosing something to your liking. Make sure the container is deep enough to cover the pump in water completely.
Decorative Elements
Add river rock, marbles or tumbled glass to the container. Alternatively, purchase specially designed displays to sit above water level.
Safety Precautions
Never operate the water pump out of the water; you will damage the pump's motor permanently. It will be more convenient for you to operate the pump if it has a power switch built into the electrical cord than if you have to unplug it from the outlet.
Reduce Water Loss
Expect some splashing, but try to reduce the loss of water out of the container by aiming the fountain's spray towards the center of the container rather than the edges.
