<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Size Matters
All bassinets have weight restrictions set by the manufacturer, so parents should move their baby to a crib once he exceeds that limit. Babies should also not sleep in a bassinet once they can sit up since the shallow construction poses a safety risk. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, most babies learn to sit between the ages of four and seven months.
On the Other: Bassinets Not Necessary
Although some infants may be more comfortable in the smaller environment of a bassinet, they can safely sleep in a crib at any age. The American Academy of Pediatrics only recommends that babies sleep on their backs whether in a crib or bassinet.
Bottom Line
Babies can sleep in a bassinet as long as they meet the weight requirements set by the bassinet manufacturer and cannot sit up. Using a bassinet is not necessary for an infant's safety, however, and parents must ultimately make the decision whether to use one.
