According to the most recent statistics available, in 2008 boating accidents in the U.S. accounted for 700 deaths, 4,700 injuries and $54 million in property damage. Alcohol use remains the leading factor in fatal accidents.
Prevention/Solution
Ninety percent of boating fatalities occur on boats where the operator has no boat-safety training. Training courses are offered by state and local authorities or are available online usually free of charge. A safe, informed boat operator will not be drinking alcohol while operating the boat.
Floatation Devices
Coast Guard safety regulations require one approved life jacket for each passenger as well as at least one Type V throwable flotation device, such as a life ring, on board. Children under a certain age are required by most localities to wear a properly fitting personal floatation device at all times while in the boat.
Distress Signals
Three red flares, handheld orange signal flags, an electric distress light or floating orange smoke signals are required for signaling when in distress.
Fire Safety
One Marine Type USCG B-II or two B-I fire extinguishers are required to be on board.
Horn and Lights
A mechanical whistle or horn is required along with working navigation lights turned on from dusk until dawn.
