  • I recommend staying away from the fast foods of tax prep and finding an accountant. Most people don't need to pay someone else to do their return. I generally do my own but have an accountant now who will do it for $75 if I need her to. If you have a simple return with no Schedule reporting you can do it online for free on the Turbo Tax website. You used to be able to do it for free on the IRS website too but don't know if they still have that option. The software has become so expensive I recommend using a professional rather than paying that astronomical amount for software.
