Dosing for Heartgard is primarily based on a dog's weight. Dogs weighing 25 to 100 lbs. are to take one chew tab per month. Large-breed dogs, more than 100 lbs., might need to take more than one chew tab to accommodate the extra size.
On the Other: Age, Breed and Health
Heartgard is not recommended for dogs 6 weeks and younger. Some breeds of dogs in the collie family have a higher sensitivity to the medication found in Heartgard, so a veterinarian should be consulted prior to administering the medication. If a dog suffers from chronic heartworms, the Heartgard treatment should be administered every 30 days.
Bottom Line
The age, breed, size and health of the dog need to be considered when dealing with heartworms. The Heartgard medication is successful for many dogs, but some might have sensitivity and experience adverse reactions to the drug. Consult with a veterinarian before starting any medical treatment with your pet.
