    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Full hydraulic steering is one of the few viable alternatives to traditional rack-and-pinion systems. Hydraulic steering offers a number of advantages, you need to ensure that you choose the right components for proper operation.

    Function

A hydraulic steering system does away with mechanical steering linkages in favor of a series of pumps and rams.

    Components

The steering wheel is usually connected to a pump with four outlets. Two of these connect to either side of the steering-ram cylinder to provide steering. The other two run to a power-assist system.

    Advantages

Hydro-steer systems eliminate the need for mechanical steering connections, allowing for more suspension travel. They also greatly simplify the mechanics of four-wheel steering.

    Traditional Applications

Due to its weight, complexity and cost, hydraulic steering is most often found on heavy-duty industrial applications that already use some sort of hydraulic system.

    Common Fears

Though many in the off-road market label hydro-steer systems as dangerous, it's worth bearing in mind that stock brakes are hydraulic as well.

The reason people in the off road community consider full hydraulic steering dangerous is that because if the any one of the components go you can't steer at all. In a traditional steering gear box set up (real 4X4's do not use rack and pinion) there is a mechanical link from the steering wheel to the tires. The power steering system can break and you can still pilot the vehicle. The same is true with rack and pinion, if the power steering system breaks there is still a mechanical link between the steering wheel and the tires.

True that stock breaks are hydraulic. Also true that park breaks or Emergency breaks use mechanical linkages or cables if the hydraulics fail.
