There seems to be as much debate as genuine fact about the effectiveness and practicality of fuel cell technology. But it's easy to build your own fuel cell using some basic household items.
Fuel Cell Operation
A fuel cell uses two electrified plates to pass an electrical current through pure water, causing the oxygen and hydrogen molecules to separate. The hydrogen produced can then be used as a pure fuel for combustion engines.
Container
The size will vary, but any nonconductive material can be used for your cell's outer shell. Plastic and glass are the most commonly used materials.
Electrodes
Stainless steel plates are generally considered best for electrode material, because they are fairly nonreactive.
Pure Water
Using pure, distilled water is critical to the electrolytic process. Impurities in tap water can disrupt the reaction or build up on the electrodes and reduce their efficiency and longevity.
Power Source
A high amperage DC power source takes priority over a high voltage one. Car batteries are ideally suited to the task.
