Appearance

Valet keys look much like regular car keys. Usually they look like a smaller or simpler version of the regular key.

Function

A valet key offers only as much access to your vehicle as a valet needs to have. It allows the valet to open the car doors and operate the ignition so she can park the vehicle. The keys do not open locked glove compartments or trunks.

Significance

When you use a valet parking service at a restaurant, club or similar establishment, giving your valet car key to the valet will enable you to protect any valuables in your glove box or trunk for as long as your car is in the care of the valet service.

Availability

Not all cars come standard with valet keys. Some economy cars, whose owners may not be in the habit of using valet services, offer valet keys only as an option. Make sure your dealer gives you the valet key if it does come standard on the vehicle you purchase.

Warning

If your car came with several sets of keys, make sure you know which of them is a valet key. Otherwise you might find yourself locked out of your glove box or trunk when you're away from home and need to retrieve the registration or consult your owner's manual.
