  • Boom trucks are very useful vehicles for many types of business and industry. The term boom truck can apply to several different styles of trucks, but they all have a few things in common.

    Identification

Generally, boom trucks are heavy-duty flatbed trucks with a crane mounted at either the front or back of the flatbed. The crane can be extended away from the truck, hence the term boom truck.

    Function

Boom trucks are most often used to haul materials or supplies from a company to a job site. The boom crane allows the truck to self-load and unload.

    Knuckle Boom

Knuckle boom cranes store on the truck by folding like a curled finger. Knuckle booms are compact but only allow for crane work close to the truck.

    Trolley Boom

A trolley boom truck has a crane that can extend like a telescope. When stowed, the boom will extend over the truck bed and sometimes the truck cab. Trolley booms have extended reach to place goods in high places or across obstacles.

    Specialty Uses

A truck with a basket at the end of the boom to lift workers is a form of boom truck also called a bucket truck or cherry picker. Concrete pump trucks have booms that extend with a pipe and nozzle to direct wet concrete on construction projects.
