A brake rotor is one of the main components of a vehicle's braking system. It is a large, circular piece of metal that's attached to the vehicle's axle. Friction from the brake pads on the rotor makes the vehicle stop.
Types
Brake rotors are either solid or ventilated, depending on their intended use.
Heat
Friction on the rotor results in a large amount of heat, and rotors can tolerate only a certain amount of heat. Excessive heat can cause the brakes to malfunction.
Remachining Rotors
Rotors can be remachined, which reconditions them to a like-new state. However, there is a minimum thickness the rotors must maintain to be effective, so they must be replaced if the minimum thickness cannot be maintained.
Squeaking brakes
When brake pads are replaced but the rotors have not been remachined, brakes can squeak.
Excessive wear
If the brake pads are too worn, the metal-on-metal contact between the brake pad backing plate and the rotor will permanently damage the rotor.
