The most important thing to consider is if your question is social or informational. A social question is one that is intended to create discussion or to let people give creative answers, but informational questions help people understand something or offer useful information about a topic.

Some examples of social questions are:

    "What does blue taste like?"
"What's your favorite thing to have for breakfast?"
    "How are you today?"
"If you could be a South Park character, which would you be?"
    "What color is your car?"

Social questions like these belong in the Outside the Bag category.

If, however, your question (or its answers) are informational, if they could be helpful to others, please use our category finder as you post your question to find the best place for it.

Some examples of informational questions are:

"What's your favorite South Park episode?" -> South Park
(This is informational - it could help someone who is new to South Park and wants to learn more.)

"What is the capital of Canada?" -> Canada
    (Informational, clearly.)

"Would you own an electric car?" -> Alternative fuel autos
(Informational: the answers are likely to discuss the advantages or disadvantages of owning an electric car.)

"What is the average price to build a garage?" -> Construction
    (Informational, clearly)

Also, please do not use the "Answerbag" categories unless your question actually has something to do with Answerbag, its service, or its users.

We need your help to keep Answerbag organized. The more we can keep things where they belong, the more everyone will be able to enjoy the site!

One day, you decide to ask a question, and you have a bit of trouble having to put it in the right category.

Let's say you ask a quesiton. Your question has to deal with house problems. An important category is the Home and Garden category.

When you ask a question, it is best recommended to put it in the most accurate category if possible. If you are uncertain, read the question again, and look for key words that can help you choose the right category for it.

Also the moderation "Wrong Category" is there to help.

There are many questions that are in the right category, but it can be used to put it in a more specific place under the sub categories.

If your question is about a Honda vechile, then put it in Honda rather than the Autos category, although it is under the Autos category.

I really find it is a little hard to select the true category.
For example,i will talk about what is digital photo frames. But i can not find a suitable one.It surely belongs to electronics or gifts, electronics closely.and then no choice to select,it relates to digital cameras, but not this one.

Of course, the answer of AB-Joel to this question is very good.
But how to find the right category?
After a long time, I found out today an absolutely revolutionnary way to find out which category is suitable for your question.
Until now, I just used the category tree in the input mask. And I found it sometimes very difficult to find the right category that way.
Today, I remarked over the category tree the enter field "search category".
You just have to type some word which could be a category in this field, and as you are typing, a list of proposed categories will appear (for instance, with names starting just like the word you are just typing).
Well, this may not be revolutionary for some people, but for me, it was a great discovery. Maybe it could also help other people to sort their questions.

If you type your question and then press submit it will take you to the category page.

In the top box, type what your question is about, you only need one or two words and it will give your the main category. and some sub categories click the ones you want and more lists will appear and this will give you more categories until you get to the end.
The lists will then stop and you can check your grammar spelling and question mark and hit submit.

It works for me, I hope you understand my explanation.

That's why I find it pretty difficult to get high points when I give a try asking some good questions. Choosing the best category for the users - may be sort of the bottom line.

I could see the tips well and i'd say to myself 'Try today'. :-)

Edit: I made a mistake because I was supposed to add this one as the user comment, not as the answer. Oh no there's no way I can delete it, I'm really stupid. :-(
