Yes, there is. It's called an editor. Anyone can make a website, but, most of the time, the company publishing the book will at least make the information is a LITTLE accurate.

Money. Any vanity press house will chunk out as many copies of your book as you can pay for. Then you have to pay a distributor to flog your books to the bookstores and fight for choice shelf position and space. Given the long process of hammering out a book, most people give more credence to what is in print versus that which is blogged online even when the book writer's product is garbage and the blogger's stands up to any acid test of literary value you can find. That will be changing as the population the lived with books as their first and primary reference/entertainment/education vector dies.
