It means that I'm in the doghouse, or she is contemplating an answer, or perhaps why I am asking such a ridiculous question at an inopportune time or place...

Usually it means he's thinking about the question, or he didn't hear me/wasn't listening. I ask the question again or say, "Hmmm?" or "Did you hear me?" How about you M?
