i once had a dog with chronically dry and itchy skin. sometimes it would get so bad that he would actually scratch the fur off of himself. after a couple of years of expensive medications for skin disorders and lots of wasted trips to the vet, i learned that he had developed allergies in his skin.

many of the chemicals and oils in fish such as makeral and salmon reduce the effect of these allergies. mix a small amount of makeral into your dogs food every meal and see what heppens after a couple of weeks.

Vaseline is good to put on the dry skin for now. You need to get the proper ointment from a Vet. It could be an allergy, the food it is eating or the environment. If it gets red and inflamed then you have a hot spot which will need a tar based ointment.
