  • I don't know, to be totally honest with you. I think it was a real Mickey Mouse decision, if you ask me. The Astronomers who made that awful choice, must have been Goofy at the time. +5
  • PLuto was different from any of the other historical planets, and astronomers recently started discovering numbers of other objects rather similar to Pluto. If Pluto was classifies as a planet, then it would be unreasonable not to classify other similar objects such as Sedna and Quaouar as planets. So they had a choice: change Pluto's designation, and have a list of 8 planets which would probably never change, or keep Pluto and add the others,which would give a list of 12 or 13 now, and probably be extended every few years. Furthermore, since the new objects (known as Kuiper Belt Objects) would come in all sizes, there would be a difficult decision as to how small something could become before it was no longer a planet. A new telescope might suddenly give us dozens of new planets over a few years.
