If it is severe, see your doctor or go to an ER since it could also be a kidney stone or something like a disc problem. If it is not severe, an ice pack on the aching area, while lying down will make inflamed nerves and tissues cool down, and the pain will lessen. Apply the ice or gel ice pack for 15-20 minutes only on the back with a towel in between the ice pack and your skin, every 2-3 hours off in between icings. Also you can take "over the counter" pain medications, Advil or those considered "NSAID'S" are best for inflammation reduction. Long term care: Strengthen your stomach and back muscles doing exercises for them which you can find online or learn from a trainer or consultant at a local gym. Maintain ideal weight for your height. Use good lifting postures when lifting things. Sit and stand and walk with good posture. Again, you can learn these on online sites or from a local gym or other instructor. If it is chronic and you have never told any doctor about it, it is wise to do, since you could have a back problem that cannot be fixed without professional help.

I'd say gentle exercise (like physical therapy) and a supportive matress to sleep on. Of course, that's assuming you want to remedy the source of the pain and not the pain itself as a symptom. Pain pills will numb the pain temporarily but will do nothing to relieve the pain permanently. Nobody wants to live the rest of their life dependent on pain pills to get them through the day. Did you doctor tell if you surgery is an option?

There are so many remedies that it is impossible to point to one. However, remember this: ICE for twenty minutes, then wait twenty minutes, then ice for twenty minutes. Keep repeating. An often forgotten remedy is posture. Stand up straight, shoulders back, stomach in. Sit properly, no slouching in a chair!

When it's bad I heap on supplements like glucosamine chondroitin & msm along with ice (as mentioned) and fish oil. I don't do well with any meds except motrin. When my back is better I use an inversion bed; feels good and helps back as well as over all circulation. See Dr first on the last.
