Bipolar II with trouble sleeping, here. I'm on 350mg of seroquel taken at night. I have been on it at different dosages for about 2 years. My main problems are nightmares, difficulty in getting up and daytime somnulence. I am going to ask my pdoc to make some changes so I can function during the day. I do know that small dosages are best if the trouble is getting to sleep. At the higher dosages, it is not necessarily better to get you to sleep. I believe it is a histamine effect, anyway always keep educating yourself about your medications so you can give your prescriber informed information concerning your progress.

I took Seroquel for 2 years. For the last year and a half I took 400 mgs a day. At the beginning I did have nightmares, but they did end up going away after my body adjusted (maybe 2 months). If you just started the medication I would say wait out the nightmares as it is most likely only temporary. But as always, contact your psychiatrist with your concerns about the nightmares induced by the Seroquel and DO NOT quit taking it or change your dosage pattern.

Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate), a novel anti-psychotic medication developed in 1996 by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia and acute mania of bipolar disorder.

The prescribing information at http://www.astrazeneca-us.com/pi/Seroquel.pdf lists "abnormal dreams" as an infrequent side effect of taking this medication.

There is nothing about Seroquel causing nightmares in the list of side effects. It could be due to getting on or off of Seroquel too quickly or related to your dosage.

i just started taking seroquel 100mgs a night for several reasons including bipolar and other metal problems i suffer from :( im only 16. since starting it i have had the worst dreams of my life,, ive had dreams of everything from my family being tourtured and killed in front of me,, to dreams where i am killing them and have no control. also in many of my dreams i get killed in such horrible ways. i wake up every morning trying to sort out the difference between reality and the dreams ive been having. has anyone been able to find another drug or way to cure these dreams? if so please comment back or send me an email at:: gshorty1988@hotmail.com it would be so much help. thank you. and good luck to those who are expierencing the same things.

I have been on Seroquel for 1 yr now. I thought the nightmares would eventually fade after I got used to the med. I'm not on a high dose, but the dreams seem worse and more frequent that ever. I wake constantly. Sometimes my yelling alarms me, and my family.Sometimes shaking in a cold sweat. My nerves are rattled during the day because of the constant sleep interruption and the haunting dreams. I didn't know that it might be the Seroquel causing this, even though I suspected it, till I read these comments. All I take is Suboxone, besides that. I'm honestly sick of it. Though I'm not looking forward to having the withdrawls, I will stop taking the mess.AsAp! I also feel very tense, like my jaw muscles get tight, when it starts kicking in. Even though it helps me sleep after a while, is this worth these feelings? Not to me. I also end up sleeping 12 hrs due to exaution from being up all night. I'm sure the med works for some people; everyones chemistry is different. Maybe those of us with these issues could try not taking it for a night or two and just see if we can fall asleep without a drug. Even if we have to switch to something else, perhaps at least, peaceful sleep will follow. I'm trying this tonight. I hope ya'll sleep well!

I am on Seroquel as well, and the nightmares I have been having are to say the least disturbing. I thought i had nightmares before I started on this med , but now, oh my . I have been on it for a month at a low dosage . I have to wake myself up because of the nightmares.

i've been taking seroquel 50mg a night to help me sleep and am now experiencing these "nightmares" after a week. I like seroquel in one way it seems to really help me get to sleep better than other things i have tried. But I cant stand the nightmares, they seem so real. Not sure what to do yet. The first dose I took caused muscle spasms and twitches all night (my husband told me) and they aren't as bad but the nightmares are picking up. I feel better during the days but husband says I'm somewhataggressive again.

I have been on seroquel for about 3 months and my nightmares are so real it seems...it is starting to take an emotional tole on me. The nightmares are always in a negative manor and NEVER positive...it is really strange. When I wake up in the mornings and then I think about then nightmares ALL DAY LONG and it messes with my head. I continue to take it b/c it helps me sleep and my depression had reduced since taking this drug. I'm not sure if I should keep taking this drug or not. Do the nightmares ever go away????????

Yes! I have the most horrible nightmares and I'm only on 100 mg. a night to help me sleep. I've actually had nightmares that were so real I woke up crying or screaming and had a hard time sorting reality from nightmare for the first few seconds. I've also had visual hallucinations if I take it after having a few drinks. I'm not mentally ill so it scares the hell out of me. Stay away from this drug!

Yes,I to had them and they were so vivid I got to where I could not distinguish from what was real and what was fake,Seroquel made me high as a kite and I could not come down making me aggressive to the point you had to watch yourself around me because I was ready to fight.I went off of it and I was ok but no I was'nt my drug withdraws were so bad heroin was'nt even that bad years and years ago.I had to go back on it I cannot stop the addiction to it is so bad that I cannot even function without it.I take it I am high.I go to sleep,I wake up I am high,I cannot drive and as long as you leave me alone I am fine but you just cannot approach me.I have a bad addiction to it.It does'nt help it makes you high and aggressive then you can't thrive without it.Julie

I've been on 100mgs for a couple of years now and have found it gives me the best sleep. I always did have nightmares, and now just find them annoying rather than disturbing. Geodon had me paranoid and a bunch of weird things happened to me because of it. We are all different, but the biggest complaint I hear on account of seroquel is the weight gain.
