Japan had a cholera outbreaks in 1882 and again in 1895. In the 60s, they had an epidemic of encephalitis. They've had their bouts of flu. A particularly bad one came in 1957, when A/B then two waves of A2 flu swept the nation. That triggered a wave of schizophrenia due to fear of the effects of in-utero exposure. In 2007, they had a widespread outbreak of measles among college students. But cleanliness standards and food handling are very good in Japan and they are generally a healthy lot compared to much of the world.
