I heard that Black Friday was so named because that was the day the department stores finances would go into the black.

Yeah Kingpinn has it right. All year retail businesses are kind of operating on that fine line between the Black and the Red as far as balancing their books to stay in business is concerned. So they say. Analysis' predicted this to be a bad year because of the economy and the publics un-willingness to use their credit cards. Guess we'll all have to wait and see.
