Chocolate, of course, frequently has very bad results, sometimes even death. But also too much salt, fat, sugar, white flour, typically a lot of the same things that are "bad" for US are not going to be good for our dogs either! Carrots if over fed can be a problem as can garlic. One rule of thumb to remember is that OUT OF a given number of individuals...SOME are going to have a negative reaction to SOMETHING. Corn based foods typically are not optimum for dogs. Corn is not easily digested, and simply fails to provide the best in nutritional elements that meet most dog's needs. Yet, SOME DOGS do quite well on corn based feeds, it may be that they are getting additional supplements from some other portion of their over all food in take, or they have somehow adapted. While an overwhelming number of dogs experience skin allergies, (most common) when fed corn based feeds. Less than optimum coat condition, some behavioral issues, some digestive problems have also been linked to corn based feeds. So, generally speaking common sense rules with regards to feeding your beloved dog. They don't need "colored" foods, they DO NEED MEATS, in most cases, excepting some medical conditions where too much protein can be an issue.

Chocolate, of course. But my vet also told me that pork is not good for dogs because it is difficult to digest.

Dogs, like humans, are omnivores and can eat pretty much anything that people can. Of course, there are individual variations, so some dogs may have particular reactions to individual foods. The two BIG exceptions that humans can eat but dogs shouldn't: 1) Chocolate - this acts as a stimulant in dogs. If a dog eats enough chocolate, its heart can beat so fast that it ceases to pump blood effectively (tachycardia). This is largely a dosage issue, so if you feed your Great Dane one mini-Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, it probably will have very little effect. On the other hand, if a 16-pound beagle eats a pound of Joseph Schmidt truffles, then a visit to the vet for treatment is in order (Yes, I have personal experience with this...:-<...) 2) Anything in the onion family (onions, garlic, shallots, scallions, etc.). Again, this is largely a dosage issue. Dogs cannot properly digest onion-type plants. A small dose will pass right through and cause no ill effects. A large ingestion will cause digestive system issues. Also, this is not strictly a food, but it is related... DO NOT give your dog acetominophen (Tylenol). This is poisonous to dogs. Small doses of aspirin are OK and can be used to treat minor pain.
