Carpet is the most child-friendly, but if you have any pets I would strongly advise against getting carpet for your home since it gets very smelly, dirty, and can be expensive to clean.

I would not have Carpet because of stains heald in the pad. My preference is Wood Floors with Cork subfloor so they are softer when fallen-on, if extra money is available get Radiant Heat Tubes installed too so the floor is warm!

They fall so I would go with the carpet.

If you have 'real' wood rather than the fake, plastic wood that many people call wood, then wood is better. That fake stuff give off fumes that are undetectable, yet very dangerous. The same thing is true with tile. If the tiles are real ceramic tile made with quality ingredients, then tiles are best. I use a cotton futon for the little ones. A good clean carpet made from high quality wool or cotton is good, but very expensive. Most carpets today are made from re-cycled plastic bags and soda bottles, and can be very toxic. I recently read where the tiles in a housing development near here actually emitted a small amount of radiation, and it was detected by a Geiger counter. There was a high incidence of cancer and infant mortality in the area, which is why they tested it.

depending on whose perspective you are viewing the question form, from a child's, Im sure the carpet, from an adults, wood or tiles !:)

Dark carpet.

hardwood. carpet stains and is expensive to clean. tile can crack and is harder if the kids fall down.
-
I would say carpet as it is softer and warmer for a child's little feet.

Well in terms of crackin' heads, I'd go with the carpet. But on the other end of a potential continuum, say spaghetti sauce all over the room, I gotta go with the (rubberized, 'hose-down'?) tile! ;-)
