I have a calendar on my desk that ends on December 31, 2009. Does that mean there will be no 2010?

In short, no. The Mayan calendar doesn't have a complete end, it's just the end of a very long cycle and the beginning of a new one.

Actually the maiyan (sic) calender doesn't end in 2012. The Mesoamerican Long Count Calender ends on 21st of Dec 2012 or 23rd Dec 2012 (depending on which scholar you favour). The Mayans were only one of several peoples that used that calender. It is rather silly to ascribe some sort of religious apocalypse to the last day of this calender just because it's far more accurate than the stupid Gregorian one we use today. Just like any other calender... when it's done, you just flip it over and start again. Hope this helps.

Yes, definitely.
